One Hand Bandit

I was in the kitchen the other day making dinner for my family (me and the husband) when my husband walks in and starts to laugh. I soon realize that he’s laughing at the fact that I have my left leg folded in a yoga-type of position, with my foot planted firmly against my knee of my right leg. On my left knee is our 15-week old daughter (whom I have my left arm wrapped around- clutching her to my body). With my right hand, I am pouring taco seasoning onto our ground turkey and mixing in all of the seasonings… “Do you need help?” was the question asked and I quickly replied “no.” Am I stupid or something? Yes would have been the better answer- take her from me, please so that I can finish dinner… but I said no. I thought okay, ding-dong, now you have to finish this 3-ring show not only with one hand, but on one leg.

I started to think about all of the other things that I do during the day with one hand- eating my food, brushing my teeth (If I even get to that some days), dressing my daughter… and I thought I know there are SO many other Moms out there who could say hell yeah! to that. For example, today Cadence had an absolute fit- screaming and crying and carrying on… it reminded me of when she was born and the nurse came in and said “Do you need a break? She’s been crying for a while, I’ll take her.” And so she wheeled her away… it wasn’t even a half-hour later that she brought her back “I can’t get her to stop crying” was what she said… and that was the beginning of our life with her.

So anyway, today she’s having a fit, she’s pooped her outfit up… waaay up her back and so I’ve changed her, wiped her down and have her in just a diaper. I’m trying to dress her, but the screaming is unbearable. SO, I pick her up and start shushing her (isn’t that what they say is one of the “cures for colic”? The right kind of shushing? I have her pressed against my chest and I lean my body back… JUST ENOUGH that she won’t fall off. Hold her with my left hand and proceed to put on her onesie with my right hand. All the while bouncing up and down lightly and shushing her to death. Once I get both arms in, I switch and put my right hand around her and put my left hand under her bum so that I can snap the little buttons with my left hand- still bouncing UP and DOWN- shushing away. I think I burned a few calories performing that exercise.

  • Mr has never understood my ability to one handle the baby plus something else. It literally was a skill I developed by the time he was four days old. It is like BAM! Have a baby… learn new skill. :)
