Where Has Kindness Gone?

Whatever happened to the days when you could call your child’s pediatrician to ask a question and they would I don’t know… answer it?

I mean seriously? Cadence has had diarrhea for 3 days now (no poop today, though- thank God).

So yesterday, I call her Drs office to ask the nurse a question and the conversation went something like this:

Me: “Hi, I’m calling because I’d like to speak with the Nurse please.”

Not-so bright receptionist: **Long Pause** “Uh, well they are really busy right now so, what is this for?”

Me: (Trying really hard to hold back a smart ass/rude comment) “Um, my one year old daughter who has had diarrhea for three days now.”

Not-so bright receptionist: **Sigh** “What’s the patients name? Date of birth? Aaand your name? I’ll have them call you back as soon as they can.”

Me: “Thank you so much I appreciate it.”

Not-so bright receptionist: “Mmhm, Bye”

Really? You fuckin dizzy broad. I know that they are busy. I’m busy too. But since my husband pays money out of his paycheck every month for me to have health insurance for my child and I took time out of my busy schedule to call you tools, the least you can do is connect me with someone who can answer my question. As busy as they are, I’m sure it will only take about a minute.

I mean, where the hell is the customer service? That’s just some bullshit as far as I’m concerned. They are in the business of taking care of children. Helpless, children- every question is important as far as I’m concerned.

Or, maybe it’s just me.

Rude.

  • Ufortunately our health care system on all levels has become like the fast food, drive thru service, in and out to turn a dollar. I remember the days where you could make a call and talk to a nurse and they would help you out on the phone until the doctor could get back to you. Not any more. It’s all about the mighty dollar. So sorry you are going through this….the system is a racket anymore.

Here in the land of universal medicare, in my province (Quebec) we have an health care organization run by the government called the CLSC (please don’t ask me what it stands for!) that helps take care of public health issues. You can go there for vaccinations, referrals, information and they make home visits to new mothers and the elderly. They even have a 1-800 number that you can call and they will answer all general questions or direct you to where you need to go for what they can’t help with. For all the kinks in the system, I am generally pretty happy with it. I know that there is huge debate in the US about universal health care with arguments on both sides of the fence but, I have to say, this is definitely an argument on the “for” side. I am glad that your little princess is doing better :)

  • I’m sorry you had to go through this…I usually go ask Dr. Google. :)
