In the Blink of An Eye

She was up watching basketball with her dad, because wherever her dad is- she needs to be (of course).

I was downstairs doing who-knows-what… I think I was folding laundry on the sofa.

BOOM

“HONEY! HONEY! HO. NEY!

I think I took the stairs 6 at-a-time I flew up there so fast. My heart was racing faster than Ricky Bobby was running when he thought he was on fire.

I don’t even know if my brain could fully comprehend what was happening, but I was bracing myself for the worst.

There she was. With our alder-colored, vertical, 6-drawer dresser lying on top of her.

Most. Horrifying. Moment. Of my life.

Chris had two drawers off of her and had her free before I could blink my eyes.

And this whole thing started just that quickly. She was opening and closing drawers- per usual.

Daddy was asking her NOT to- per usual.

He turned around for five seconds, she must have pulled out one too many drawers and the dresser had too much weight out front and it fell on her.

The scream that she let out was horrifying, but the scream that her dad let out was one of great desperation and fear and… only one a daddy can let out. “Let’s go. We gotta go to the hospital!” were the first words out of his mouth.

I knew from prior experience (when she hit her head before and I took her to the doctor who told me that kids are more resilient than we parents think) that I needed to step back, check her out and see how she was doing…

She? Popped up like nothing ever happened:
“I doh a owee Mommee. (I got an owie Mommy)

Owee oh ma head Mommee. (Owie on my head Mommy)

Kiss it peese. (I kiss it)

Oo Bedder (All better)

Kank You Mommee”

and off she ran to go play with her toys.

Like it never happened.

I felt her whole body limb-by-limb. I checked for bruises, cuts and bleeding- nothing.

Thank God.

I totally feel like this could’ve been in that Parents Magazine “It happened to me” section.

I now refer to that day as “the day my husband saved our daughter’s life” because he moved faster than the wind to get that dresser off of her so it wasn’t on her that long.
